Joseph Muscat, affectionately known as 'il-Bezuza', has been nominated posthumously for the prestigious Gieh ir-Repubblika award by the Breeds of Origin Conservancy. The non-profit organisation considers Joseph Muscat a ‘national treasure’ and one of the last guardians of Malta's critically endangered indigenous goat species.

Darryl Grech, Founder of the Breeds of Origin Conservancy, praised Joseph Muscat as an iconic figure in Malta, admired by many. ‘He was an exemplary figure who embodied the traditional values of Maltese rural life, continuing his devotion to livestock herding and farming well into his later years until his death last Sunday,’ Darryl said.

Joseph Muscat’s lifelong dedication to preserving Maltese rural traditions made him a beloved figure in the community. His work was instrumental in maintaining Malta’s indigenous livestock and agricultural heritage, as he was one of the last herdsmen representing a way of life that has mostly vanished.

In addition to herding, ‘il-Bezuza’ played a crucial role in organising key agricultural events, such as the Imnarja festival, and was instrumental in starting the Wirja Agrarja in his hometown of Dingli. His deep commitment to these events highlighted his desire to pass on agricultural knowledge and preserve traditions for future generations. He was especially known for his expertise in raising indigenous Maltese goats and sheep, a passion he shared with others to ensure the survival of these breeds.

Joseph Muscat was also deeply dedicated to his family, which, along with his rural work, defined his character.
