New look! Malta International Airport enhances passenger experience through local art and culture
The airport already houses an art collection dating back to the 1960s.
Malta International Airport is set to transform the passenger journey through a new long-term arts and culture strategy designed to showcase the island’s rich heritage and contemporary creativity. As Malta’s primary gateway, the airport is positioning itself not only as a transport hub but also as a cultural introduction to the country.
Central to this initiative is a newly formed Arts Committee made up of employees from across the organisation, ensuring that the programme reflects both operational insight and a shared vision.
Cultural strategist Maria Galea, in collaboration with ARTZ ID.agency, is leading the development of a cohesive and forward-looking cultural framework. An independent Art Advisory Panel will also be established to guide open calls and maintain curatorial quality.

The airport already houses an art collection dating back to the 1960s, featuring notable Maltese artists such as Esprit Barthet and Alfred Chircop. Under the new strategy, these works will be made more visible, complemented by new commissions that reflect Malta’s evolving identity.

The programme will launch with a dedicated exhibition space in the airport’s recently inaugurated Schengen corridor, where artists and collectives will be invited to contribute through an open call system. Over time, the initiative will expand into a structured calendar of cultural activations.

By integrating art into its spaces, Malta International Airport aims to create a more meaningful and memorable experience, reinforcing its role as both a physical and cultural gateway to Malta.
