Look out! Ħaż-Żebbuġ launches new road signs to protect hedgehogs
As warmer weather sets in, hedgehogs tend to become more active!

Ħaż-Żebbuġ Local Council has introduced a series of new road signs aimed at protecting hedgehogs as warmer weather sets in and the animals become more active.

The initiative, led by Mayor Steve Zammit Lupi together with the council, features eye-catching animated signage designed to alert motorists to the increased presence of hedgehogs on local roads. As these small mammals emerge more frequently during the hotter months, they face a higher risk from passing traffic.

Through this effort, the council hopes to encourage drivers to remain vigilant, especially in areas where hedgehogs are known to roam. Motorists are advised to slow down and stay alert for any animals attempting to cross the road, helping to reduce the risk of harm.

Residents are also reminded that, if they encounter a hedgehog in need of assistance, they should reach out to wildlife authorities for guidance on how to handle the situation safely.

So next time you’re on the road in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, remember to keep an eye out - you might just help protect one of these vulnerable creatures.

Have you ever seen a hedgehog in Malta?
