What a transformation! St Paul niche from Rabat’s Saqqajja area being restored to former glory
A beloved site among Rabat’s residents.

Emma Galea

Going up Saqqajja in Rabat, you might have noticed this St Paul niche overlooking the Saqqajja square.

The state of the statue had been depleting over the past few years, but it is thankfully now being restored to its former glory.

In fact, the restoration is pretty much almost finished. Only the wood and the metal around the statue need to be installed, before it’s ready.

The niche dates back to 1727 and was built by none other than Grand Master de Vilhena.

Throughout its history it has always been a site for religious devotion and it’s finally back in the state it rightly deserves.
