The University of Malta has revealed the winner of its World Photography Day Competition, held under the theme ‘Maltese Traditions’ and open to all UM students, as well as administrative and technical staff.

Taking first place was a striking photograph snapped by Matthew Vella, who perfectly captured the drama and motion of Gozo’s traditional street horse races. The shot, taken in mid-August during the Feast of Santa Marija in Żebbuġ, Gozo, bursts with movement and energy – from the speeding horses to the cheering crowd – all under the silent watchful eye of the Cittadella in the distance.

The runners-up were equally impressive, with Stephania Vella’s work that captured an incredible fireworks display over the Cittadella, and Kurt Caruana, whose nostalgic photograph of a traditional Valletta fabric shop beautifully evoked days gone by.

Well done to Matthew and to all the talented participants who celebrated Maltese culture and creativity through their lenses, showing just how alive our traditions remain today.

Congratulations Matthew!

The history of this iconic statue dates back to 1901, when a simple wooden cross was placed on the hilltop by local farmers.
