What a shot! 50-year-old photo shows what Malta’s Regional Road tunnel looked like back in the 1970s
Different times!

Emma Galea

A photo shared by Maureen Peplow to Nostalgia Malta shows a super cool shot of the Regional Road tunnel that was taken in 1976.

The photo depicts a motorcyclists exiting the road as he looks back at the a tiny mini copper also exiting the tunnel.

The tunnel looks reasonably quiet compared to today as during those days there was definitely less traffic.

You would be surprised to know that the regional road tunnel leading to and from St Julians were actually funded by the Taiwanese.

The tunnels themselves were originally named after the Chinese President, Sun-Yat-Sen.

The Taiwanese government was trying to join the UN but needed other governments to support it so they tried to persuade Malta to their favour, but they still did not manage.
