West End leading lady tells all ahead of this weekend’s Mamma Mia
Charlotte Gordon is on the island and gearing up for FM Theatre’s production of the Abba musical!

1. You’ve played the role of Donna Sheridan before. What attracted you to the role and what’s the best thing about playing her?

Donna is a savvy, strong willed, down to earth woman which I love and admire. I love her honesty, especially with her daughter. Who wouldn't want to play a character like that?!

2. You’ve had a stellar theatrical career. What do you consider a highlight?

We're lucky in theatre because we have so many magical moments (that pierces the lows of not working!) but, selfishly, I have to say that it was hearing that I was nominated for an OFFIE-Off West End Award for a play that I poured my heart and soul into, called The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. I then received another award for it, which was incredible. As actors we're always looking for recognition and validation. I got it.

3. What attracted you to accepting the role here in Malta?

A month on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean where it's sunny and warm... hmmm, let me think... it's cold, dark, raining and snowing in London... YES PLEASE!! I had friends who have been and said how lovely it was. I love places steeped in history, and this definitely is. I'm loving it!

4. Have preparations and rehearsals been different to what you’re used to back home?

In London we rehearse during the day, but because everyone here has a full-time job on top of their acting careers, we have had to rehearse in the evenings. It's good though, I'm a night person. The level of commitment they bring to it is amazing.

5. What are you looking forward to most about the performances?

Having performed in Mamma Mia before, I know how the piece is taken and it's lovely. You get tears, laughter, singing and dancing in the aisles... no pressure Malta!! It's a feel-good show which is great for all the family. Also, as it's a new direction; I feel like I have really shaped her and actually feel more like her than I ever have before!

6. What are your impressions of Malta so far?

I love it. I love the history, the buildings... the people have been so friendly, and I adore the colour of the stone - its breath taking! Mdina was stunning and Gozo took my breath away. I'm definitely coming back! I rather like pastizzi, but I'm keen on Kinnie too!
