Team Malta opened its campaign at the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor, Slovenia, with a solid performance, finishing Day 1 in fifth place out of 15 nations in the Division Three competition.

Among the highlights was an exceptional performance by Rachela Pace, who secured maximum points for Malta with a commanding win in the long jump, reaching an impressive 6.39 metres. Her victory marked one of the team’s strongest showings of the day.
Middle-distance runner Gina McNamara also delivered gold in the women’s 800m, crossing the line in 2:10.05, while sprinter Matthew Galea Soler impressed with a second-place finish in the men’s 400m, clocking 46.90 seconds.
The women’s 4x100m relay team added to the medal tally with a strong third-place finish, posting a competitive time of 46.99 seconds.

At the end of Day 1, Malta sits in fifth place with 184 points; matching its performance from the 2023 edition in Poland. Iceland and Luxembourg currently top the table, with Moldova close behind in third on 197 points.
The championship wraps up today, with Team Malta aiming to build on its momentum.
