Officials from Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), in collaboration with Nature Trust Malta, recently carried out an environmental restoration intervention at Wied Għollieqa aimed at protecting and restoring the valley’s natural habitat.

The initiative focused on several important conservation measures, including habitat restoration, erosion control, invasive alien species removal, and general site maintenance. During the intervention, a total of 47.5kg of invasive plant species was removed from the area.

Among the species cleared were Balloon Vine, Bramble, Prickly Pear, and Giant Reed, alongside invasive trees such as Lead Trees and Golden Wreath Wattle, all of which pose a threat to Malta’s native ecosystems by competing with indigenous vegetation and disrupting natural habitats.

The intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard biodiversity and encourage the recovery of native flora within the valley. Encouragingly, local species including Alexanders and Wild Asparagus are already naturally re-establishing themselves in the restored habitat.

Thank you to all those involved!
