Jared Micallef secured qualification for both the Commonwealth Games 2026 and the Mediterranean Games 2026!
Maltese athletics continues to gain momentum on the international stage, with standout performances from several athletes competing abroad this past weekend.
Leading the way was Jared Micallef, who delivered an exceptional run in the 800m at the Adelaide Invitational. Clocking an impressive 1:47.18, the Maltese athlete secured qualification for both the Commonwealth Games 2026 and the Mediterranean Games 2026, as well as meeting the standard for the CSSE. This achievement adds to his strong form this season, following a recent national record in the 1000m.

Elsewhere, Rachela Pace impressed in the United States, recording a 6.03m leap at the UTSA Invitational 2026. Although aided by a +3.5m/s wind, the performance highlights her promising early-season condition as Malta’s national record holder in the long jump.
Meanwhile, Gina McNamara competed at the prestigious World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland, clocking 4:30.19 in the 1500m against a highly competitive international field.
With these encouraging results, Maltese athletics is showing clear signs of growth and competitiveness on the global stage.
Attention now turns back to local action, as the first Challenge Meeting of the season takes place this weekend, giving fans in Malta the opportunity to witness the country’s top talent compete on home soil.
Well done to all those involved!
