The Malta Weightlifting Association celebrated an outstanding performance at the final Commonwealth Games qualification event held during the British International, with several Maltese athletes delivering record-breaking results and strengthening their positions on the international stage.
Leading the way was Rylee Borg, who produced a historic performance in the 88kg category by achieving a remarkable 301kg total, officially making him the strongest weightlifter in Malta’s history. Rylee impressed throughout the competition, successfully completing all three snatch attempts at 124kg, 127kg, and 131kg. He continued his dominance in the Clean & Jerk, lifting 162kg, 166kg, and an incredible 170kg. His exceptional showing resulted in six new national records and a 10kg improvement on his previous personal best total.

Roberta Tabone also delivered an excellent performance in the 63kg category, increasing her total to 203kg, just three weeks after competing at the European Championships. The athlete successfully lifted 85kg and 88kg in the snatch before opening the Clean & Jerk with 111kg. Although she missed her second attempt at 115kg, she showed great determination by returning to secure the lift on her final attempt, further improving her Commonwealth Games ranking.
Meanwhile, Tenishia Thornton was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the 69kg competition after feeling unwell, while Kim Camilleri Lagana could not participate due to MATSEC examinations taking place during the event.
Despite these setbacks, the Malta Weightlifting Association proudly confirmed that Tenishia Thornton, Roberta Tabone, and Kim Camilleri Lagana have already secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games finals. Rylee Borg, despite his outstanding result, remains only a few kilograms short of reaching the top nine finalists.
Well done to all!
