Welcoming and accessible! Green space in Mosta transformed into a sustainable community haven
Key features of the garden include drought-tolerant plants, a drip irrigation system, and mulching to conserve water and prevent soil erosion.
Ġnien Carmelo Dimech, a 1,600 square meter garden in Mosta, has undergone a significant transformation focusing on sustainability and community involvement. The project was completed through the collaboration of Ambjent Malta, Public Works, and the Mosta Local Council.
Key sustainability features of the garden include drought-tolerant plants, a drip irrigation system, and mulching to conserve water and prevent soil erosion. Over 3,000 seasonal plants, trees, and shrubs have been added to enhance biodiversity and improve the garden's environment.

A water reservoir with a capacity of over 100 cubic meters has been installed to collect stormwater, improving water management. The garden also incorporates a solar-powered paving system that powers its water pumps and lighting. A new playground structure has been introduced, generating renewable energy from children’s movements, promoting both play and sustainability.
The garden is now open 24/7 and features smart benches equipped with Wi-Fi, CCTV coverage for safety, and a drinking water fountain. These upgrades make Ġnien Carmelo Dimech a welcoming and accessible space for the whole community.

This project is part of broader efforts by Ambjent Malta and Public Works to improve public spaces across Malta.
Similar regeneration projects have been carried out in locations like Birgu, Birżebbuġa, and Floriana, with ongoing developments in Santa Luċija, Mellieħa, and other areas.
These initiatives aim to enhance the quality of life for residents while promoting environmental sustainability across the island.
