The fortification walls surrounding the Citadel in Gozo have received some much-needed TLC, and a video has been released showing just how much they've changed.

The video shows the extensive restoration works done to the walls of the enclosed hilltop city, giving them a new lease of life, which will help this popular Gozitan site attract even more visitors than it already does.

The Citadel’s rich history

The first fortification walls were built in c.1500, but were improved in 1622 and are the ones still standing today. They were commissioned by the Crown of Aragon Order of Saint John and were in use between circa 1500 and 1868.

The Citadel, which was a lived-in city in bygone eras, houses churches, a prison and other historical buildings, and has been included in Malta’s tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998. Visiting this Gozo marvel is like stepping back in time, and is a definite must-see if you’re heading to Malta’s sister isle.
