This historical day emerged due to a €1.5 million restoration project

Last weekend called for a rare sight! On Saturday, the vanes of a centuries-old grain windmill in Naxxar spun, giving observers a chance to experience something magnificent. that previous generations had not.

Apart from this unique spectacle, according to Times of Malta, the white and blue windmill is currently the only operating example of its kind in Malta which makes this event all the more special.

In 2019, an intensive €1.5 million restoration project was started by the local government to restore the historic Tal-Ghaqba windmill, which was constructed in 1710 by the foundation of Grandmaster Perellos.

The work on the wooden machinery and the stonework was time-consuming and precise, requiring much knowledge and abilities that had not been used in a long time.

However, Saturday was the day that this windmill got to shine! The windmill is two storeys high and has a wooden cover that can be rotated 360 degrees to face the wind.

The council, EU funds, and the Development Planning Fund of the Planning Authority all contributed to the project's funding. Doric Studio architects, Creaid Restoration Projects, and Radix (mechanics) were in charge of the project.
