Rough weather will bring rough seas, which can potentially damage beaches and nearby areas if not maintained properly. And following the past days' storm, local organisation Raniero’s Adventures – Live Life posted a video that sheds light on the current situation involving car tyres being used as fenders for boats in different bays around the island.
Raniero explained that ERA was informed about the situation in Bugibba, having been sent a video, but no action was taken and “with the first storm they have already been washed away into the sea.”
Raniero calls out water sports companies who are using the tyres as, since they’re not costly, they’re left there after peak season, risking sea pollution if they are dragged into the waters during a storm. “If they were to use proper fenders which would cost money and be removed after use, we would not have this amount of tyres polluting our oceans!”
Local environment conservation organisation Zibel endorsed Raniero’s position, sharing the video, saying that 650 tyres and counting have been found this year. “Raniero’s Adventures – Live Life simply explains why this number is so high and why days like today elevate what ends up in our waters.”
