Ever wondered how the magic of opera comes to life? This summer, music lovers in Malta will have the rare opportunity to step inside the world of opera and witness world-class vocal coaching unfold in real time at Valletta’s Teatru Manoel.

From 28th June to 6th July, the Opera Nova Project’s first International Summer Academy will open its doors to the public, offering an exciting programme of open masterclasses, an exclusive Q&A session, and a grand final Gala Concert.

The Summer Academy brings together a star-studded faculty and emerging talent from Malta and beyond. Taking centre stage are Malta’s own Joseph Calleja, one of the world’s top tenors, Professor Janis Kelly, Chair of Vocal Performance at the Royal College of Music in London, and Professor James Pearson, formerly of the Vienna State Opera. Together, they will guide the next generation of singers through an intensive week of professional coaching – and you’re invited to watch it happen.

An open masterclass will be held in Sala Isouard and on the main stage at Teatru Manoel. These sessions will allow the public to observe as top vocal coaches work one-on-one with singers on technique, style, and dramatic interpretation.

Join Joseph Calleja and Janis Kelly in a special audience Q&A taking place on Wednesday 2nd July at 7pm on Teatru Manoel’s main stage. Ever wondered what it takes to become a professional opera singer, or what life on the international stage is really like? This is your chance to find out.

The Summer Academy concludes with a final gala concert on Sunday 6th July at 7.30pm, showcasing the tremendous progress of these rising stars in a beautiful programme of operatic arias and art songs.

This one-of-a-kind initiative follows the Opera Nova Project’s successful first academic year, which saw students perform fully staged and costumed opera scenes from iconic works such as Carmen, La Bohème, Cosi Fan Tutte, Eugene Onegin, and L’Elisir d’Amore under the guidance of local and international tutors.

‘This is an unmissable opportunity to delve into the world of opera, whether you're a seasoned fan or a total newcomer,’ says Gillian Zammit, Artistic Director and co-founder of the Opera Nova Project alongside opera director Denise Mulholland. ‘Watching a masterclass live is like seeing art being created in front of your eyes – it’s exciting, emotional, and incredibly inspiring.’

Whether you’re curious about classical voice training or simply want a glimpse behind the velvet curtain, the Opera Nova Summer Academy is a unique way to celebrate the beauty of the human voice – and the talent shaping its future. Tickets for public events, including the open opera masterclasses, Q&A and final recital, are available at www.teatrumanoel.mt.

Will you be there?
