The Maltese Islands were yesterday targeted by all the elements; from rain, to thunder, hail and just enough sun to remind us that it's May, but perhaps most interestingly of all were the funnel clouds that formed across certain parts of the island, predominantly in Gozo.

In footage taken in Hondoq before the approaching storm hit the island, funnel clouds can be seen forming across the bay. Witnessed by many as they sought shelter away from the beach, one woman opted to stay behind and film this natural phenomenon instead.

In a Facebook comment, Caroline Harrop writes: "I was lying down taking photos, people must've thought I was mad," she said, later likening the sight to a famous scene in the Wizard of Oz.

A large waterspout was also spotted in Northern Malta, and could be seen from Gozo: "We couldn't get photo of big one over Comino and Malta though," Caroline sadly narrates.

Did you spot these funnel clouds yesterday?

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.

These birds are known as ‘Isfar’ in Maltese, and they are visible on the islands from early March to May.
