There’s no doubt that the Maltese Islands have changed a lot over the years, but the seaside town of Sliema has got to be one of the most affected by modern development. For those who grew up in the area during war time and beyond, life – and their surroundings – were very different, and this video posted to social media this week showcases just how much!

Featuring footage shot around Sliema in the 1950s, the nostalgic video shows areas of the town that are just about recognisable, including Tower Road, Fortizza and Surfside.

It’s lovely to see some spots that endure to this day – like the iconic Tony’s Bar – while others, like Chalet, have sadly been lost to the sands of time.

Vintage cars and buses whizz along its streets, and well-dressed pedestrians throng the promenade, over which old-school fishing boats can be seen bobbing over the water.

The buildings along the Front are the starkest difference though – none of which appearing to exceed two or three storeys. We’re feeling more than a little nostalgic for times gone by!
