Warm car engines are an inviting shelter for cats in winter.
As temperatures drop, the MSPCA is urging the public to be mindful of stray cats and kittens seeking warmth during the winter months.
Cold weather can be especially dangerous for animals living on the streets, and warm car engines often become an inviting shelter for cats trying to survive the chill. Unfortunately, this can lead to serious injury or death when vehicles are started without checking.
The MSPCA reminds drivers that taking just a few seconds before turning the key can save a life. Gently knocking on the car’s hood creates vibrations that may alert hidden cats, while honking or lightly tapping the car body can also help scare them away.
It is equally important to look under the vehicle and around the wheels for any signs of movement or paw prints. After knocking, waiting a short moment gives animals time to escape safely.
This winter, a little extra care can make a big difference. By staying alert and compassionate, we can help protect vulnerable strays who depend on human kindness to survive.
Let’s keep these little stray safe!
