Volcanic delays! Eruption of Mount Etna causes flight delays and cancellation at Malta’s Airport
Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe

Francesca Vella

Due to the eruption of Mount Etna that took place earlier today, several flights out of Malta were delayed today, and a return flight was cancelled. One of the delayed flights was redirected to Palermo.

Arrivals and departures at Catania Airport have since been suspended until further notice, due to the ash clouding the surrounding skies in Sicily. The lava ash cloud can reach up to 4.5 kilometres, thus totally disrupting air travel. Additionally, the runway at Catania Airport was rendered unusable, being covered by volcanic ash.

Thus far, there is no information regarding the evening flights operating to and from Catania. Keep up to date on any flight information on the Malta International Airport website.

Have you had any plans disrupted by the eruption?
