Transformation! A natural space of 4,000 square metres opens near the Simar Nature Reserve
The restoration focused on ecological protection, public safety, and visitor accessibility.
A once-neglected area of around 4,000 square metres near the Simar Nature Reserve has been completely transformed into a safe, accessible, and environmentally sensitive public space.
The project, inaugurated by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli and Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, was carried out with support from the Project Green team, local councils, and BirdLife Malta.

For years, the site suffered from illegal dumping and neglect. The restoration focused on ecological protection, public safety, and visitor accessibility. CCTV systems, walls, gates, and fire prevention measures were installed, while pathways and ramps were built to allow safe movement and water drainage. Landscaping prioritised native plants, and furniture made from recycled materials, including benches and picnic areas, was added.
The project also enhances the value of the nearby Simar Nature Reserve, part of the Natura 2000 network. No lighting was installed to protect sensitive biodiversity. Informational panels now educate visitors on ecological, cultural, and conservation topics, highlighting protected habitats and species.
With over 700 residents within a ten-minute walk, the regenerated site now offers recreation, education, and connection to nature for local communities.
