Throwback to the 1960s! Check out this old photo of the serene Mgarr Harbour in Gozo back in the day
Families used to gather on benches, watching the stillness of the sea

The Department of Malta recently shared a nostalgic throwback photo capturing the quiet charm of Mgarr Harbour in the 1960s. The black-and-white image paints a serene picture of a bygone era, where families gathered on wooden benches, enjoying the stillness of the sea and each other’s company.

Long before the influx of modern tourism and high-speed ferries, Mgarr Harbour was a peaceful retreat for locals. Situated in Gozo, the harbour served as both a transport hub and a well-loved community space.

This glimpse into the past highlights the simple joys of life in Malta decades ago; when socialising meant sitting together in nature and time seemed to move more slowly. Today, while Mgarr Harbour remains a vital point of connection between Malta and Gozo, the pace has quickened.

As Malta continues to grow and modernise, this treasured memory from the 1960s serves as a gentle reminder of the island's cultural heritage.

Do you remember the quieter side to Gozo?
