The Valletta foodie trail: breakfast, lunch & dinner in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Eateries by food lovers, for food lovers!

Valletta is another locality in Malta where one is spoilt for choice when it comes to eating well! There are so many eateries, the following is really just a selection. I think it’s fair to say that there are at least another ten places which I would definitely recommend. But, try these first!

Breakfast

Piadina Caffe is a lovely place to start your day venturing around Valletta. In case you’ve never been before, it is located on the steps of the sweet Santa Lucia Street, dotted with colourful cushions and low tables. Order one of their renowned piadini (hence the name), and a coffee or a fresh juice, and sit in pretty, watching the city getting set for the coming day.

Other good ideas for breakfast include heading down to Prego - one of Valletta's oldest establishments - for a coffee and ham and cheese toast! Yum!

Lunch

Taproom possesses a classy, European city feel. The placement of its tables - there's the option of sitting on one large table at the back; on intimate booth-like tables; or on the bustling Old Theatre Street - guarantees an enjoyable experience. Besides that, the service is great, and the food is also rather wonderful: an array of inventive salads; delicious pasta dishes and meat dishes will make anyone's day complete! Taproom may sometimes require booking, so it would make sense to call in advance.

But, there are also other places where you can enjoy a lovely lunch. The list of great eateries in the capital is vast! Restaurants such as Sotto in South Street and La Vecchia Taranto in St Paul's Street are highly recommended for their great pizza. And as time goes by, more diverse cuisines are making their way into the capital. The relatively new eatery Yugto specialises in Asian street food, for example. So it all depends on what you feel like eating really. There's sure to be a place to satisfy that craving!

Dinner

Somehow, for me, dinner by the sea is always a winner. It provides a different view from Valletta’s gridded streets. With this in mind, The Harbour Club is my dinner choice where you can experience such an environment. Located just above the Grand Harbour, and overlooking Malta’s beautiful Three Cities, the restaurant serves high quality food and drink, with seasonal and local ingredients taking centre stage. This is truly Mediterranean food with French flair. End off the meal and your foodie trail with a stroll along the coast just opposite the restaurant.

But, if you'd rather nibble on something as opposed to gorging on a whole meal, Valletta is full of wine bars which have both an intimate aura and original food. Try out Trabuxu for some cheese fondue accompanied by quality wine.
