The Laferla Cross: Siggiewi’s sacred summit of faith, heritage, and breathtaking views
This iconic cross holds deep historical and religious significance for the Maltese people
Situated on top of Malta’s highest hill, stands the Laferla Cross, locally known as Is-Salib tal-Għolja. The Laferla Cross is both a spiritual symbol and a striking landmark. Erected on 27th September 1903, this iconic cross holds deep historical and religious significance for the Maltese people.
The vision behind the Laferla Cross came from Fr. Paul Laferla of Siġġiewi, who sought to create a powerful, open-air representation of the Via Crucis - the Way of the Cross.
His dream was to bring the story of Christ’s Passion to life across the rugged terrain of Tal-Għolja, turning the hillside into a life-sized, sacred journey. The result was not only a devotional route for pilgrims but also a unique blend of faith and landscape that remains deeply rooted in Malta’s cultural heritage.
Over the years, the Laferla Cross has become a beloved pilgrimage destination, especially during Holy Week, when hundreds of faithful walk up the hill in candlelit processions. The spiritual atmosphere, combined with the panoramic views from the summit, offers a deeply moving experience that connects tradition with awe-inspiring natural beauty.
Today, visitors are drawn to this serene site not only for its religious value but also for the breathtaking vistas it offers over Malta’s countryside and coastline.
Whether you’re there to reflect, to walk in the footsteps of countless pilgrims, or simply to take in the view, the Laferla Cross remains a timeless symbol of faith, community, and Maltese identity.
