The 5th Valletta Film Festival: A yearly appointment with a whole lot of excitement!
The Valletta Film Festival is a yearly display of artistic expression, during which the capital city of Valletta is transformed into an outdoor cinema. Visitors tour the city, popcorn bucket in hand, ready to discover the latest exciting stories out there. Want to find out more? Check out these top tips below.
The event
The Valletta Film Festival is all about the movies! Independent creations shown on a massive screen in the heart of the city. This is one of the many perks of having 300+ days of sunshine! Outdoor events like these are easily coordinated and draw lots of visitors too. This event can be enjoyed with a week pass that allows access to a great number of screenings - if you’re a real movie buff, try to get the full entrance.
The venues
Set around the capital, venues such as Spazju Kreattiv, Pjazza San Gorg and Pjazza Teatru Rjal are some of the top spots to visit if you’re looking to catch the best shows! Hopping around from one location to the next is also a possibility during this festival. There are so many shows on at different times, you can catch a glimpse of all your favourites.
The films
The screenings that are shown during the 10-day long festival are always quirky and may even possess deeper messages. There is a competition - called the Cinema of Small Nations, showcasing, yes, you guessed it, the cinema from smaller countries - with contestants hailing from Ireland, Estonia, Cyprus, Malta. This is the first year the competition is being limited to the tiniest countries, but there's always been a competitive element. And, this year, the festival continues in the tradition of involving audiences in their selection with an Audience Award given to the most popular film.
This event not only brings together artists of every nature but it also gives independent filmmakers, script writers and actors the chance to be celebrated by the public at large. Go VFF!
