Straight out of a postcard! 1970s photos and advertisements show the stylish Air Malta airplanes
A trip down memory lane.

Emma Galea

A series of photos shared onto various social media sites show the different Air Malta planes from all the way back in the 1970s.

In this photo (Joe Zammit) one can see the Air Malta planes all lined up next to each other at the airport. They had completely different designs from the ones we’re used to and even had that navy blue colour incorporated in them.

This shot, which was shared by the Facebook page ‘Malta Airport Movements by John Visanich’, shows the Boeing B720-040B AP-AMG. It was Air Malta’s first aircraft and it looks like that when the photo was taken it was undergoing some maintenance.

The photo below was shared by Air Malta themselves and shows the same first Air Malta aircraft as it touched down on the tarmac in Luqa for the very first time.

The clipping below does not however show a photograph but an advertisement. One can see the pilots and air hostesses in their handsome uniforms. “We’ll send one of Boeings for you”, the slogan read as the Maltese cross on the plane shines in the background.

Air Malta’s last flight will be taking place on the 30th March, 2024 as a new national airline is launched the very next day.

30th November 2023
