Shrouded in legend! Did you know about the mystery of the three crosses of Żabbar?
Some believe the crosses once marked the boundary between Żejtun and Żabbar.
Along the quiet Bidni road in Żabbar stand three stone crosses that have intrigued locals and historians for centuries. Known as the Three Crosses of Żabbar, they are surrounded by legend, faith, and unanswered questions.
In his book Marsaskala, Canon Joe Abela describes the central cross, carved with detailed symbols of the Passion, placed directly opposite the nearby chapel. Yet, despite their prominence, the origins of the crosses remain a mystery. Who erected them, and for what purpose?
Some believe the crosses once marked the boundary between Żejtun and Żabbar, a line that would later help shape the parish of Marsaskala. Others, citing the writings of Guzé Muscat Azzopardi, suggest a more dramatic tale: that the site commemorates three monks slain by Turkish invaders, with the crosses marking their burial place.
Whatever the truth, the Three Crosses continue to spark curiosity, embodying Malta’s blend of history, legend, and spirituality.
For visitors and locals alike, the crosses remain a symbol of mystery, faith, resilience and a reminder of Malta’s layered past.
