Spend your evening wandering through history and greenery.
If you’re exploring Rabat in the evening and looking for a peaceful spot to unwind, here’s great news: the gardens above St Paul’s Catacombs will now be open to the public for free every evening from 6pm to 8pm, starting today (Thursday 13th November) and continuing until 28th February 2026.
Spread across more than 4,500 square metres, the gardens offer a serene, well-lit space perfect for quiet reflection or a leisurely evening stroll. Visitors can enjoy comfortable seating areas, toilets, and the presence of an on-site security guard. While pathways are in place to guide visitors, you’re also free to wander across designated grassy areas within the grounds – an ideal setting to pause and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of this historic site.

Heritage Malta
The gardens sit directly above the iconic St Paul’s Catacombs, one of Malta’s most important archaeological sites. Once serving as a burial ground from Punic, Roman, and Byzantine times, the catacombs provide the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. This remarkable complex – found in the area known as Ħal Bajjada or Tad-Dlam – includes over 30 hypogea, with the main cluster covering an impressive 2,000m² of interconnected tombs and passages dating as far back as the 7th or 8th century AD.
So whether you’re a history lover or simply want a unique evening walk under the Rabat sky, the gardens above St Paul’s Catacombs are well worth a visit!
