Sort it out or fork it out! Waste collection penalties to be introduced in Malta
Malta is getting down to business.

Pay attention or pay the fine, folks! Waste collection fines could be issued as of December in Malta. The Environment Ministry has said that recycling figures have been very positive, but there are still some who aren't adhering to regulations of waste separation (you know who you are!), and that they'll be announcing a date when fines will be issued, soon.

The new scheme, launched last October, has been a resounding success, with 90 tonnes of organic waste collected on the first day. As of yesterday at noon, the amount of organic waste collected nationally stood at a whopping 1,332 tonnes. Way to go, Malta!

Still, it would appear that old habits die hard, and some haven’t taken waste separation as seriously - but boy are they about to! As has been seen around the islands, stickers are currently being placed on bags brought out on the wrong day in order to (hopefully!) better educate the public rather than fining them first. But fines WILL be introduced some time in December, so watch out! You’ve been warned!

If you’re unsure about which bag to put out today, you can check your locality’s waste collection schedule here.
