Sort it out now, folks! Malta's extended grace period for rubbish bag fines is over
Sort it out or fork it out.

No more chances, folks. We need to get our rubbish sorted ASAP as the grace period (an extended one, I might add), for rubbish fines is officially over. Fines were originally going to be issued as of December, but some kind-hearted soul thought the local population needed some more time to adjust to the system. And now, time’s run out!

The new waste separation scheme, launched last October, has been a resounding success, with 90 tonnes of organic waste collected on the first day. In the initial months, warnings were issued with red stickers being stuck on the rubbish bags brought out on the inappropriate days.

New rules have been set, so listen up! Anyone caught taking out the wrong garbage bag for collection will be liable to a fine between €150 and €500, so it really pays to pay attention.

Still unsure when your locality’s collection days are? Check out the waste schedule here.
