Serving variety! Malta’s weather this week ranges from 28°C heat to possible ‘xita tal-ħamrija’
As we skip past mid-May, Malta is in for a classic late-May mix of summer-like sunshine and breezy, slightly unstable days as the new week kicks off. According to local forecasts, we’ll start off with hot, sunny weather and UV levels peaking at 9, before seeing a possible turn in conditions by the weekend.
Maximum temperatures will rise early in the week, with Tuesday (20th May) reaching a high of 28°C, before gradually cooling to around 24°C by the weekend. Minimums will hover around 18°C, though evenings and early mornings may feel cooler due to the breeze. Sea temperature is currently at 19°C, ideal for a quick dip – just keep an eye on flags if you’re heading to the beach.
While Monday and Tuesday will bring mostly sunny and warm conditions, on Wednesday 21st May the weather will turn more humid and hazy, with a chance of light reddish rain (locally known as the dreaded ‘xita tal-ħamrija’) due to dust in the atmosphere. The hazy skies are expected to last till Friday 23rd May, after which stronger winds should bring a change in conditions.
Don’t be fooled by the midweek haze, though! The UV index is set at 9, which is considered very high. If you’re spending time outdoors, make sure to lather on SPF, stay hydrated and wear a hat and sunglasses during peak sun hours (11am–4pm).
Hoping for some more spring sunshine?
