Some divers, volunteers & a ferry ride later, Loona's now under expert care.
In a show of teamwork and quick action, another sea turtle has been rescued from potential danger off the coast of Xlendi. While Wildlife Rescue Team Malta continues to monitor the area for a previously sighted turtle in need, a new case emerged when divers spotted a different turtle entangled in fishing line.
The fishing line was visibly protruding from the turtle’s cloaca – a worrying sign that there may be internal complications, possibly caused by an ingested hook.
The divers carefully brought the turtle to shore and coordinated with Wildlife Rescue Team Malta to begin a relay to transport it to the rehabilitation centre. Thanks to the swift help of Gozo Channel Operations Limited and several dedicated volunteers, the turtle – now named Loona – safely made it to Malta and is under veterinary care.
Loona is currently undergoing assessments to determine whether a hook has been ingested and to evaluate any internal damage caused by the fishing line.
Wildlife Rescue Team Malta reminded the public that all the animals they rescue are protected species and that it is illegal in Malta to keep wild animals such as turtles as pets. The team’s trained volunteers are equipped with the necessary permits and tools to handle and care for these creatures safely.
If you ever spot an injured or distressed wild animal, you’re urged to call the Wildlife Rescue Team immediately on 9999 9505.
Wishing Loona a speedy recovery!
