Rainy day in Comino? Legend has it you could hear Gozo’s mass from Santa Marija Bay
The chapel said to celebrate this mass is Qala’s ‘Kappella tal-Madonna tal-Blat’ that was actually built facing Comino!
The Department of Information recently shared a heartwarming legend that radiates 'island vibes' - whether you choose to believe it is entirely up to you.
According to the legend, when it used to rain and the priest wouldn’t be able to cross over to Comino to say mass, the islet’s inhabitants would gather at Santa Marija Bay to ‘hear’ the mass being celebrated at ‘Il-Kappella tal-Madonna tal-Blat’ in Qala, which literally translates to ‘The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rocks’.
Anyone visiting the chapel in question can have no doubt as to why it is dubbed ‘of the rocks’, as it sits perched on cliffs that overlook the popular rocky beach Hondoq ir-Rummien.
This chapel was built facing Comino back in 1882 to 1889, actually giving this legend some credibility! It’s said that it was constructed in this way for precisely that reason – so that the people on Comino could follow Holy Mass from across the straits when rough seas prevented a priest from crossing there.
Though the chapel is only about 2 kilometers from Santa Marija Bay on Comino, it's unlikely that anything was actually heard. Still, the legend endures as a charming tale!
