Qormi Council unanimously rejects Mriehel flyover project
“We cannot accept the take-up of any more green spaces from Qormi”

The Qormi Local Council has unanimously rejected a proposal for the building of a flyover in the locality. Proposed by Infrastructure Malta (IM), the project included the building of a new flyover, cycling path and pedestrian path and was aimed at addressing an accident black spot in the area.

A motion was put forward by Qormi Mayor Josef Masini Vento and after discussing the proposal, the council unanimously refused it.

While the council recognised the need to address the road safety in the area in light of tragedies that occurred, “the council remains of the belief that the agricultural land that is being worked on by farmers is not just a means of livelihood for the farmers but is also one of the remaining green lungs and open spaces in Qormi.”

“We cannot accept the take-up of any more green spaces from Qormi, especially in today’s circumstances where this town, which was once rural, has today practically become industrial, a national warehouse as well as a commercial centre.”

Activists Moviment Graffiti welcomed the council’s decision, saying it is a “very positive sign where the unified Qormi community put the interests of their quality of life ahead of partisan politics.”
