Have you ever come across one?

Ambjent Malta has preserved a piece of Maltese countryside cultural history and restored a girna to former glory.

The newly restored girna can be found at Aħrax in Mellieħa.

According to an article by livinginmalta.com shared through Kappa Vision, the girna is a stone hut and it is one of the oldest primitive structures that is found in the Maltese countryside.

The tiny building is made of unplastered local stones on top of each other forming a dome like structure, with the aim of giving nearby farmers shelter during the storms or extreme heat.

Nonetheless, it has been documented that these tiny rooms were once even used for long terms habitation, instead of just a shelter.

Although, the giren have fallen out of use today, some of them, like this one in Mellieha are being restored to continue preserving Maltese history for present and future generations.
