Peace of mind! Maltese artist explores stillness and intimacy in ‘Wens, Comfortable Silence’ this September
This art exhibition will be launching on the 19th of September.
Valletta Contemporary will soon open its doors to Wens, Comfortable Silence, a solo exhibition by Maltese artist Rebecca Bonaci. Launching on 19th September, the show will run weekly from Wednesday to Saturday between 2pm and 7pm, inviting visitors to step away from the noise of daily life and enter a space of reflection and calm.
The exhibition’s title draws on the Maltese word wens, described by Joseph Aquilina as ‘the feeling of peace of mind one experiences in somebody’s company.’ The Maltese artist embraces this concept as both theme and method, creating a body of work that foregrounds intimacy, connection, and the overlooked richness of quiet moments shared with others.

Through painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Rebecca crafts an immersive environment where colour, line, and form converge. Her figures; soft, dreamlike, and surrounded by celestial and natural motifs, dwell in utopian landscapes where family bonds and nature intertwine. Here, nudity becomes an emblem of freedom and acceptance rather than exposure, suggesting belonging through presence rather than performance.
Building on ideas explored in her 2023 solo exhibition Ġuf, the artist continues to reflect on embodied experience, memory, and intergenerational ties. In Wens, Comfortable Silence, she shifts the focus toward collective stillness, proposing a gentle resistance to a culture that prioritises constant activity.
Visitors will find not just an exhibition, but a contemplative experience - one that honours both loss and renewal, offering solace through tenderness, togetherness, and the art of slowing down.
