Out of office! 6 of the best cafes in Sliema for freelancers
Get to work

Nicole Parnis

As any freelancer will know, sometimes it's best to just get out of the house. Working from home can have its pros (i.e working in yoga pants), as well as its distractions (namely, the fridge...), so it's a good idea to get up and out as if you were going to "the office" from time to time. Not sure where to go? We've compiled a list of some of the best cafes and bars to work from in Sliema, just for you!

1. Hole In The Wall

A beloved drinking hole established in 1922, Hole In The Wall has seen a major revamp from a typical Maltese old man's bar into a hip and happening music venue. Evenings here boast live acts and quality beer to accompany them, but in the daytime, Hole, as it's affectionately referred to, is the perfect atmosphere to get some work done. Quiet and chilled, you can set your laptop up and get to work in a cosy corner. If you get peckish, just order a Hamburghini toastie!

2. Compass Lounge

Located on the Sliema front towards Qui Si Sana, Compass Lounge is an outdoor gabbana right on the seafront. Boasting a fantastic menu, you can can have lunch al fresco as you take a well-deserved break from your hectic life. Working from here will definitely remind you why you chose to be a freelancer in the Mediterranean!

3. Mint

Mint has become a Sliema favourite and a staple for yummy mummies and coffee dates, and for good reason! It's also a fantastic place for freelancers who fancy something a little special for lunch. Order yourself a flat-white as you get on with your workload, and treat yourself to one of their delicious homemade cakes or freshly prepared seeded rolls. You can thank us later!

4. Surfside

Always dreamed of a glass fronted office by the sea? Well, Surfside offers just that. A sports bar, restaurant and beach club that's been around for decades, Surfside can also be used as a workspace, thanks to the internet! Treat yourself to a pizza on a Friday and reward yourself for a long hard week as you look out to the deep blue sea. Life is sweet!

5. Il Vicolo

Located down the narrow alleyway that links Sliema's Tower Road to Bizazza Street, Italian cafe and wine bar Il Vicolo is the perfect place for freelancers to get some work done. With a great selection of food on offer from their salad bar, you can choose from meals such as baked salmon, sweet potatoes, fish cakes and couscous. They also do a great eggs Benedict! Il Vicolo is perfect for freelancers who work best in the evening as it's often busy but never rowdy.

6. Tony's Bar

A bit of a wildcard on the list, but Tony's Bar at the Sliema Ferries is a tried and tested hot spot for freelancers. Enjoy your morning cappuccino at one of Sliema's oldest cafes on an outdoor table as you do a bit of people watching. Tony's Bar is quieter than the other cafes in the area, leaving you to get on with your workload in peace. Tony's is also a great place to get a full English breakfast - that should set you up for a busy day!

Have a great work day!
