It’s all happening on Saturday 23rd May!

Heritage Malta is set to open the gates of Fort Bengħisa to the public for a special one-day event on Saturday, 23rd May, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the historic military site before major restoration works begin.

The fort will be open from 10:00am until 4:00pm, allowing members of the public to discover the site either independently or through guided tours held every hour in both Maltese and English. Tours will operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are expected to provide visitors with valuable insight into the fort’s architecture, historical importance, and current condition ahead of its long-term conservation project.

Located in Birżebbuġa, Fort Bengħisa occupies a unique place in Malta’s military history as the final Victorian-style fortification ever constructed on the islands. Built between 1900 and 1902, the fort spans approximately 45,000 square metres, making it the largest fort of its kind locally despite its relatively modest design.

Originally intended as a gun battery to protect Marsaxlokk Harbour, the fort later evolved alongside changing military strategies during the Second World War before eventually being decommissioned in the mid-20th century. Following decades of restricted public access, the site is now entering a new chapter aimed at preserving and restoring the structure for future generations.

Admission to the open day is completely free, and no booking is required. However, visitors are being advised to wear sturdy closed footwear due to uneven terrain across parts of the site. Light clothing, hats, and water are also recommended, although refreshments and merchandise will be available for purchase on location.

Heritage Malta has also reminded attendees that the site is currently not wheelchair accessible and unsuitable for pushchairs. Children must remain under adult supervision at all times, while visitors are urged to respect all safety signage and avoid entering restricted or unsafe areas during their visit.
