New additions! Mystique Complex, Rialto Cinema & others added to Malta’s National Inventory
Looking for inspiration for your next cultural adventure? You're in luck! The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH) has just unveiled the first batch of sites added to Malta’s National Inventory for 2025.
Among the 79 newly listed sites, you’ll find everything from quaint windmills and modernist bus shelters to striking 20th-century landmarks that you might even be drive past without noticing.
Here are some highlights from the list:
Rialto Cinema in Cospicua
Topping the list is the Rialto Cinema, a striking piece of Art Moderne architecture that opened its doors in 1956. With its sleek design and vibrant history, it quickly became a social hub for the people of Cospicua and the Three Cities, drawing movie lovers and curious locals alike. It’s been officially scheduled since 2010, but its addition to the National Inventory cements its status as a cultural treasure.
Mystique Complex in Madliena
If there’s one site that truly lives up to its name, it’s the Mystique Complex, also known as Villa Mystique. Created by Marquis John Scicluna, this visually arresting property in Swieqi is a patchwork of style, colour, and artistic vision. Think salvaged materials, Mdina Glass offcuts, and a quirky, eclectic flair that makes it one of Malta’s most unique buildings. Visitors are warned away from actually going inside though, as the structural support of the remaining building isn’t in the best condition!
The University of Malta Campus in Msida
A place more than familiar with local university students, the Gateway building was famously designed by Richard England.
Farsons Brewery in Mrieħel
It's been making brews since the 1950s!
Muscat Motors Showroom
A sleek relic of Gżira’s commercial past.
The former N.A.A.F.I. Warehouse & Recreational Facilities in Marsa
A throwback to Malta’s British-era military presence.
Il-Mitħna ta’ Tmien Kantunieri in Xewkija
A beautiful Gozo-based windmill full of character, whose name literally translates to 'The Windmill of Eight Corners'.
If you find yourself in the mood for a weekend wander, the full list of properties recently added to the Inventory can be found on Government Gazzette No. 21,420, dated 11, April, 2025.
