Meet the young stylist who’s turning Malta’s fashion scene on its head
“I wanna see some creative fits on the streets this winter, so let's all try to up our game!”

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Personal style is a magical thing. It’s the manner in which you do things - usually in a fashionable and unique sense that truly elaborates your inner creativity and outlook on life. Finding your own style and aesthetic is something that takes its time, not to discover but to be courageous enough to show it off and confident enough to pull it off. Some people are born with an incredible sense of style - local showstopper Jeandor is one of those very few.

Jeandor is a fashion stylist whose charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent has caught the eye of the local fashion industry. He might be young but he’s got so much going on that he was nominated in this year’s Fashion Awards. We were interested to find out how this young talent started off. Jeandor explains!

“This might seem like quite a surprise, but I only discovered that I wanted to further my knowledge in fashion styling right after a competition I had won, held by Carina Camille, in collaboration with New Look, which is what started off my fashion styling career.”

But it all started at an even younger age where art and creativity fuelled his life. “I have always been interested in fashion, from a very young age. Therefore, I am really glad my colleagues at my full-time banking job, pushed me to get into the competition and chase my dreams.”

One bold move could shoot you up to the stars and Jeandor’s possibilities here seem endless… much like his inspiration. “I’m inspired by so many things… literally anything I've seen, encountered or talked about during the day. It could vary from the clouds to the shape of a building. One of the things I really focus on when it comes to assembling a look for myself is what I feel at the time and base the look off of that. I feel very much inspired by people who think outside the box and are not afraid of being themselves, that has to be one of the greatest things in life - to be yourself.”

And right he is. Being true to yourself is what pushes you to discover more about your limits and helps to introduce you to new experiences such as his nomination to the Fashion Awards this year. “I had such a wonderful experience being nominated this year. I had only been styling for three short months in 2018 at the time of nomination, so  it was shocking to say the least - from opening the initial email, filling out the application to actually being at the Awards.”

“Fast forward to Fashion Week, I was very stressed about my looks and it was very hard to assemble any looks that weren't on Instagram already, since I post literally everything I style for myself. However, I actually managed to get some looks together with the help of online shopping. On the day of the awards I actually wore a suit by local designer Ritienne Zammit and I felt like I BRANG IT since the suit was very much my style!”

During the award ceremony, Jeandor knew it would be hard for him to snatch a trophy. “To be fair, I did know that I was not able to win in my category, since I only had three months worth of work. However, the award winner is really amazing at what he does and, on top of that, he's a very lovely human being, so congrats to Malcolm Gauci.”

A year’s gone by since Jeandor styled his first outfit for First Magazine, and, since then, he was featured in 'The New Romantics' editorial spread on The Sunday Circle. He’s got wild plans for the future which include Paris Fashion Week next January as well as a few future projects in the pipeline, so “you betta keep yo eyes peeled!”

Lastly, we asked Jeandor for his styling advice, “I usually charge for this!," he laughs. But, jokes aside I would stay away from the white tee with the red logo everyone is wearing (bet most of you will get the reference). Also I'm not sure why most people just copy everyone else. I see this happening in Malta quite often. It just doesn't work to see everyone wearing the same style of clothing. Anyways, I wanna see some creative fits on the streets this winter, so let's all try to up our game!” Word.
