Today, Christian communities all around the world will gather to commemorate Good Friday. One of Malta’s leading traditions during these sombre days is visiting Holy week exhibitions in the churches and homes of many enthusiasts.

One such enthusiast, is Alfred Grima who was recently interviewed by The People of Malta.

I love sitting quietly listening to the music, with a little incense and a burning balm mixture and someone to chat with me about sacred art”, he revealed when he asked about what his favourite thing about holding such exhibitions is.

Alfred expressed how he’s always been an enthusiast of Holy week celebrations together many other summer feasts.

My grandfather was a sacristan, and it might have perhaps been transmitted to me from him”.

His love for such a hobby started from when he was a young boy, back when he used to live with his grandmother.

I had a room which I used to set up like a Church, using material as damask. I started decorating more and more as I grew older”.

He eventually moved to Zurrieq where he started putting statue sets on display and continued adding more to his collection every year.

I had ordered sets from the much-missed Fardel of Zejtun and Noel Cauchi. Subsequently even from Pawlu Muscat”.

Nowadays if I am able to do something myself I do it, instead of asking others. I add on something new every year”, he continued.

As soon as Lent starts, Alfred starts decorating with black damask and he starts by putting up two statues every week.

For anyone who wishes to visit, the exhibition can be found at 5, Sunflower, Triq Gafa, Mosta, Malta.
