Family-run Marsaxlokk seafood restaurant Roots is set to close its doors at the end of the month after almost 12 years in business.

However, the closure will not spell the end of the Roots brand, with its owners already preparing to launch a new concept at different premises this October.

Details of the new venture remain under wraps for now, although the owners have confirmed that it will retain the Roots name.

“It is with a heavy, yet extremely grateful heart that we would like to share with you that, after almost 12 years, Sunday, 30th August 2026, will be our last day of service at Roots Restaurant,” the owners announced.

“What started as a dream, with the love and sacrifice of our dearest parents, became a journey that we could never have imagined. They believed in us, supported us, and gave us the opportunity to build something of our own.”

The owners reflected on the hard work that went into building the restaurant, including “countless long nights” and moments when they questioned whether the business would make it through.

“But most importantly, it brought us immense pride and satisfaction in having the privilege of serving each and every one of you,” they said.

“Watching you enjoy each other’s company while polishing off your plates and feeling right at home in our restaurant is what drove us every day. Every conversation, celebration, and quiet dinner became part of the Roots story.”

The family also thanked the customers who have frequented Roots over the years, as well as the restaurant's staff for their dedication.

While the owners have yet to reveal where their next establishment will be located or exactly what form it will take, they confirmed that the new Roots concept is expected to open in October.

“It is a concept to which we have decided to dedicate all our energy, with the hope of making our new Roots outlet as great a success as the restaurant has been,” they said.

“We hope you will remember our restaurant with fondness, and that you will visit us at our new establishment from this October, allowing us the privilege of serving you once again — just in a different way.”

The owners said further details will be announced in the coming weeks.
