Many, many years ago: What Sliema’s oldest bar used to look like
Hole in the Wall traces its roots all the back all the way to 1922

Sliema’s famous Hole in the Wall has released a vintage photo showing what the pub used to look like several years ago.

Its black doors appear in white and the signage is far simpler, yet the building itself is instantly recognisable.

hole in the wall

Proudly known as Sliema’s oldest bar, Hole in the Wall traces its roots all the back all the way to 1922 when the building was converted from a stable into a pub.

Over the past century, the world has completely changed. A world war reshaped the global order, Malta became an independent nation state, entire political systems rose and fell and the Internet revolutionised daily life.

Sliema itself transformed from a quiet seaside town into a busy commercial hub and the bar itself changed hands on a number of occasions.

And yet Hold in the Wall still stands, a living piece of history in the heart of Sliema.
