Calling all cinema lovers! We’ve got an extra special treat. The Sundance award-winning Maltese film Luzzu will have its first theatrical release at the Eden Cinemas in Malta from 8th September 2021, with a limited red carpet premiere screening on 3rd September. YAS!

The film, directed by Alex Camilleri, opened to wide acclaim at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where its lead, Jesmark Scicluna, a fisherman from Siggiewi, won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award in Acting for his debut performance.

Since then, the Maltese-language drama has been an audience favourite and won awards at prestigious festivals around the world, including New Directors/New Films and Sofia International Film Festival.

The film

Luzzu tells the fictional story of Jesmark, a struggling fisherman, who is forced to turn his back on generations of tradition and risk everything by entering the world of black-market fishing to provide for his wife and newborn baby.

“I’ve been touched by the response to Luzzu which has resonated with viewers around the world,” said Camilleri for whom Luzzu marks his feature film debut. “But I know this film will be most appreciated by Maltese audiences. I’m thrilled to finally bring Luzzu home,” said Camilleri.

“We’re so excited that Luzzu will have its first theatrical release here in Malta before it opens abroad,” producers Rebecca Anastasi and Oliver Mallia shared. “We hope audiences will be captivated by Jesmark’s moving performance and gripped by this story set in the heart of Malta’s fishing community.”

Ticket sales for the premiere event happening on 3rd September are now open and available here. Go on, you know you want to!
