Calling all theatre lovers!

The local theatre scene is getting some fresh voices, as Spazju Kreattiv launches the theatrical project titled ‘Skeċċ’ - The National Festival of Short Plays, which will be held from the 5th to the 7th of June.

Skeċċ will be bringing original, never-before-seen theatrical productions to the stage, offering a diverse mix of Maltese and English plays that tackle contemporary themes and cultural diversity. Each production will be between 10 to 20 minutes long, ensuring a fast-paced evening of storytelling, with audiences able to enjoy all six plays in a single night.

Over the course of three days, these short plays will be performed in various spaces within Spazju Kreattiv, aptly using the various spaces within the National Centre for Creativity for thespian creativity, experimentation, and artistic expression.

Skeċċ will be launchpad for new voices in Malta’s performing arts scene - bringing together seasoned playwrights and emerging talent, the festival aims to nurture fresh perspectives and open doors for aspiring writers, actors, and directors who have a story to bring to the stage.

Festival Director Joseph Galea emphasised the long-term vision of Skeċċ: 'Like other major initiatives organised by Spazju Kreattiv, Skeċċ should establish its place in the country’s artistic calendar. As the National Centre for Creativity, Spazju Kreattiv is undoubtedly the ideal venue to curate such a festival through its various spaces. We hope that this festival will leave a lasting legacy, with more writers and creative groups in the coming years who will begin their journey here and continue to advance in the theatre scene.'

Similarly, Daniel Azzopardi, Director of Spazju Kreattiv, highlighted the festival’s role in shaping the future of local theatre: 'Through this new project, Spazju Kreattiv remains at the forefront in providing opportunities for emerging artists to develop their skills within a professional framework that opens doors for them in the sector. Furthermore, the festival allows for the engagement of new audiences who can relate to these initiatives. In this way, Spazju Kreattiv’s programme will serve as a point of reference where one can experience topical and relevant themes and subjects that spark greater interest in the arts and culture.'

Out of 26 applications, six plays were selected by a jury of experts. Here’s what’s in store:

L-Istatwa – David Aloisio
Raġel fuq l-Irġiel – Karl Schembri
Sweet Sixteen – Josue Formosa
Unspoken Bonds – Stefan Galea Debono
Qas Jekk Jinżlu l-Allat – Clint Chircop
Il-Wieħed u Sebgħin – Brandon Terribile

With bold narratives told by a mix of established and emerging creatives, Skeċċ promises to be a theatrical event not to be missed! Get more information at www.kreattivita.org and stay tuned for tickets!
