If it felt like you were sweating more than usual yesterday, it wasn’t your imagination! As we inch closer to the official start of summer, Malta is already turning up the heat, with the islands recording their highest temperature of the year so far. Yesterday (Tuesday 20th May), central areas hit a balmy 29°C – that’s 4°C higher than the seasonal average for mid-May.
This unseasonal warmth came thanks to light southerly winds and mostly sunny skies, giving the islands a summer preview as the month-long countdown to the solstice begins.
But don’t put that cardigan away just yet! Starting today, Wednesday, 21st May, winds are expected to shift direction, bringing a slight dip in temperatures. Cloud cover will increase mid-week, and stronger winds are forecast towards the weekend.
Despite the brief cool down, UV levels remain almost as intense as in the peak of summer, so sun safety is a must. Whether you're enjoying a walk by the coast or dining al fresco, don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and water bottle.
So, while summer may officially still be a few weeks away, Malta’s already offering a taste – and a tan – to match!
Did you feel the heat yesterday?
