Rabat will soon be preparing for a road-widening scheme after it got approved by the Planning Board earlier today.

This was revealed by local NGO Moviment Graffiti through a Facebook post published earlier this afternoon which also made mention of the construction of a promenade at l-Għeriexem in Rabat. The project is expected to have devastating effects on the area: "[It] will uproot Malta’s biggest fig tree, destroy important vegetation, obliterate lush tree gardens, and is only metres away from the archaeologically sensitive area of the Domus Romana," the post noted.

"The Board voted 7-3 in favour."

The news was met with much opposition by locals with one commenting: "This pandemic has taught us nothing. With companies allowing their staff (when possible) to work from home a few days a week, it would reduce traffic (amongst other benefits) significantly. But no. Let's keep widening our roads ruining the little greenery we have left to end up in a bottle neck. But hey at least they make money right?"

Another irate resident called for protests to be held in order to appeal this latest development, deemed unnecessary by the majority of locals: "This should not even be considered let alone allowed! Madness," wrote another.

What do you think of this latest development?
