You may have heard of global public bike sharing system nextbike, which offers bikes 24/7 from a variety of areas around the island. It’s a fantastic (and environmentally friendly) way to get around Malta and Gozo, but what if you’ve never actually learnt how to ride a bike, or it’s been so long that your skills (or confidence) need a little polishing?

Well, thanks to Bikeability, a free bicycle training course being offered by nextbike in conjunction with the Stars Group, that need not stop you getting on two wheels!

The course is mostly practical and includes some theoretical sections, focusing on building skill and confidence. Through this course, the organisers say, “we hope to see more cyclists on the road, who can ride safely and share the road with other uses.”

Courses will commence this August, with several courses being scheduled over the summer across different localities. Classes will be held during both weekdays and weekends, and will consist of a minimum of three sessions of between two and three hours each.

In safe hands

All Bikeablity instructors are certified, so you know you’re in good hands! The UK’s Department of Transport National Standard for Cycling has been adopted and Bikeability Instructors have been trained and accredited as a Cycling Instructor by one of the UK’s largest certified Training Organisations, BikeRight!

What, how, who...

The course is split over three levels over a minimum of three sessions:

Level 1 introduces you to basic cycling such as getting on and off a bike, cycling with and without obstacles and performing a bike check. This level is mostly done in a safe, car-free environment.

Level 2 involves cycling in quiet roads and is there to build confidence and skill in using actual roads whilst under the watchful eye of an instructor.

Level 3 comprises cycling on major roads whereby this will introduce participants to the feeling of sharing the road with other users.

What you’ll need

There is no need to own a bicycle or protective gear. The training will be done only using nextbikes and protective helmets will be given to participants during the training sessions.

Bikeability is open to everyone from 16 years old upwards. Local Councils, NGOs, private and public organisations/companies can also participate in the programme and organise a Bikeability course for their residents, employees or volunteers.
