Italy takes the lead! Malta’s airport welcomes over 1 million passengers in August

If you enjoyed a holiday abroad over the past month, you were far from alone! As the summer holidays hit their peak, Malta International Airport (MIA) welcomed 1,072,390 passengers in August 2025, with Italy taking the lead as the busiest travel market.

The busiest day of the month was 14th August, the eve of the Santa Marija public holiday, when an impressive 39,082 passengers passed through the airport.

Accounting for just over 21% of total passenger movements, the Italian market continues to grow thanks to MIA’s direct connections to 17 destinations across Italy. Among these, Rome Fiumicino and Catania Fontanarossa proved to be the most popular choices for travellers last month.

Hot on Italy’s heels was the United Kingdom, making up just over 20% of passenger traffic. The busiest route for this market was London Gatwick, which is currently being served by four airlines – British Airways, easyJet, KM Malta Airlines and TUI Airways – ensuring plenty of travel options for holidaymakers and expats alike.

Germany and France held steady in third and fourth place, each accounting for around 8% of movements. Meanwhile, Poland climbed into the top five for the first time, overtaking Spain with a 7% share of traffic. This growth was boosted by several developments in the Polish market, including the launch of operations by flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines, increased frequency on existing flights by Wizz Air and Ryanair, and a brand-new connection to Rzeszów, a city in the south of Poland.
