So it is clear that some places in Malta are top of the pops on Instagram. This may be because pretty much any visitor to Malta is attracted to the same scenery and posts the same pictures (well, almost the same). But we don’t blame them! Who wouldn’t want these amazing shots on their Instagram profile? So…*drumroll*…we bring you 2019’s favourite Instagram locations (so you know where to get the best photos).
1. Marsaxlokk Fishing Village
Every nook and cranny of it, particularly the luzzu boats and matching benches.
Malta’s characteristic fishing boats dotting the harbour with the Parish Church in the background is another common shot, as is the unique ‘Love Malta’ shell mosaic and Malta bench.
2. Popeye Village in Mellieha
The classic picture here is the one taken looking over the former film set from atop the cliff, with or without someone posing in the picture.
Popeye Village was the original film set of the 1981 Popeye film and is now a popular children’s theme park. But, truth be told, everybody loves it. A photo of the colourful original wooden houses is a must, even if actual entry into the village is optional.
3. Mdina
And, anywhere makes for a pretty picture here as this city is as charming as can be. But the all-time favourite Mdina Instagram pic goes to the one featuring the blue door with the bougainvillea.
Mdina’s characteristic streets and impressive entrance compete for the prize of most picturesque.
4. Tal-Mixta Cave in Gozo
This large cave on the cliffside with rockcut steps leading inside is impressive enough by itself. Add to that its amazing view over Ramla Bay, famous for its bright orange sand and aquamarine sea, and you’ve got one of Gozo’s top Instagram locations.
5. Comino Blue Lagoon
The Comino Blue Lagoon is envy worthy with its amazing, clear azure waters and the islet of Cominotto sheltering the bay. However, it’s the pineapple drink that gets the most attention. Understandably, as, together, they truly spell EXOTIC.
6. Valletta Streets
#Vallettastreets have their very own Insta tag and you’ll find a few favourites. Most include traditional Maltese balconies and old shop signs. But in any Valletta tag, the all-time most Instagrammed location in the capital is the corner house with the red window shutters and balcony featuring the phone booth. Sweetly located above Bridge Bar, with steps leading down to the harbour, all angles of this shot are magnificent.
7. Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto in Wied iz-Zurrieq is one of Malta’s most popular tourist attractions. But what’s equally wonderful is the view of the Grotto from above with the islet of Filfla on the horizon. And you know this by the enormous amount of Insta shots with this specific perspective.
8. Gozo Citadel
The old city of Gozo is highly Instagrammable from every angle. It looks like something out of Game of Thrones, a living testimony to another era, much like Mdina in Malta but even rawer. The views are just as stunning, stretching in all directions, as is the Citadel itself perched upon a hill. Yes, this one’s definitely a favourite.
9. Ex-Azure Window in Gozo
The Azure Window was perhaps the most photographed scene in the Maltese Islands when it was still in its full glory. Gone since March 2017, the shot of the missing window is surprisingly popular. Notwithstanding the loss of the famous window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock, as well as several other interesting features, make Dwejra an amazing location to visit.
10. Wied il-Ghasri Gozo
A truly unique view on the Maltese Islands is Gozo’s very own snake-like mini-fjord leading from valley to open sea. Of course, it would win a place on Malta’s most Instagrammed locations! It would be even more popular had the area been easily accessible, which it isn’t, as no public transport even approaches this remote spot. But the Xwejni saltpans on the way from Marsalforn via Qbajjar make a worthy coastal hike or you can get your own wheels.
11. Ghajn Tuffieha
Considered Malta’s most beautiful beach by many, largely for its unspoilt natural surroundings, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, also known as Riviera Bay, is one of Malta’s top models when it comes to photography.
Bar the extraordinary sunsets, the steps and the view over Gnejna are some of the favourite shots.
